主人公家福深愛著妻子阿音，4歲的女兒不幸去世之后，他們辭掉工作，家福從事戲劇，阿音從事編劇。
一次做愛后講述了一個故事，便成為阿音劇本的創作靈感源泉，并開始與不同的男人做愛。為維系和阿音之間的感情，家福選擇沉默。但不久，阿音因突發腦溢血離世，給家福內心留下了更多悲傷和遺憾。
痛苦中，家福接受了話劇《萬尼亞舅舅》的導演工作，為了每天有固定時間聽對白錄音，他駕駛那輛紅色轎車到廣島的劇組，并選擇住在離劇組一小時車程的旅館。劇組為他安排了專職司機，雖家福極不情愿
